What Aligners Can Do
When Invisalign®® was originally developed, the intention was to help adults who were interested in orthodontic care, but who were reluctant to wear braces. As such, the aligners can correct a variety of issues:
- Crowding
- Gaps between teeth
- Crooked teeth
- Crossbites
- Open bites
- Overbites
- Underbites
The way it works is you would receive a series of aligners created with the help of computer-aided design. Each aligner is worn for about two weeks or so, then replaced with the next aligner in the series.
By wearing the aligners as directed, you gradually reposition your teeth until you have the straight, beautiful smile of your dreams.
Advantages of Aligners
As we noted above, many adults are hesitant to wear braces. This may because they worry it will make them look younger, or they are concerned it may be a distraction in a business meeting.
With Invisalign®, you won’t have those concerns. Each aligner is made of clear plastic and custom-molded for your teeth at each step of your treatment. At each step of your progress, the aligners will blend in with your smile, making them practically invisible. Most people won’t realize you are wearing anything unless you mention it or remove your aligner in front of them.
That’s not the only advantage Invisalign®® offers over braces.
Many people have complained about metal braces feeling scratchy or irritating on the soft tissues inside their mouths. If a wire breaks, it may even poke into your lip, checks, or gums. With smooth plastic aligners, you won’t have those concerns.
The fact that you can remove your aligners is another advantage. Where braces are on your teeth 24 hours a day, every day of your treatment, you can remove your aligners for up to a few hours each day.
That means you can take them out during meals and snacks. That, in turn, means you can eat anything you want during your treatment. With braces, you are supposed to avoid foods that are chewy, crunchy, hard, or sticky since they can cause wires to bend or break or cause brackets to come loose.
Just remember to clean your teeth and you aligner before you put it back in.
