Treating Gum Disease: The Fast, Easy and Painless Way

perio protect treating gum disease

Gum disease. There are more than 3 million cases per year in the United States alone, a country with relatively easy access to hygiene products and dental care compared to other less-developed nations. Severe gum disease is said to affect one billion worldwide according to WHO. The main causes? Poor oral hygiene and tobacco use. Both preventable. That’s why we take preventative care so seriously and why we focus on Complete Health Dentistry. Because oral health affects your whole body health.

Preventative care for gum disease involves having a great oral hygiene routine. Here is an example of what that should look like:

8:00am Morning Brush and Floss (brush for 2 minutes with fluoride toothpaste)

12:00pm After Lunch Rinse (use water to rinse or a mouthwash – keep with you at work or school to have on hand for after lunch)

8:00pm Before Bed Brush and Floss (brush for 2 minutes with fluoride toothpaste)

Obviously times may vary based on your schedule, but this is what a great oral hygiene routine looks like. But, on top of your daily routine it’s also important to see your dentist at least twice a year for a deeper clean that can only be accomplished by a professional.

If you find yourself with swollen, bleeding gums and you worry you may have gum disease, treatment has never been easier thanks to Perio Protect. With the Perio Protect system, you will get custom-fit trays that deliver germ-killing medication below the gumline where your toothbrush is unable to reach. This noninvasive treatment takes just 10-15 minutes a day and is effective at restoring your gums to health when gum disease is in its early and moderate stages. Guess what one of the side effects are? Whiter teeth! It’s a win-win!

For advanced gum disease, Dr. Davey will use a safe laser to gently remove damaged gum tissue. We may then use deep cleaning techniques to rid your teeth and their roots of tartar and bacteria. Laser treatment is more precise than a standard scalpel, so your recovery time will be shorter than with traditional gum disease methods.
